Realme 6 Pro Review: A Good All-Round Phone With Stiff Competition

Realme 6 Pro is the latest released smartphone from Realme. This article will discuss Realme 6 Pro and what makes it an all-around good smartphone.

With the Realme 5 series phones, Realme popularized the idea of the four-camera phones in the price category by launching Realme 5 in the price category below Rs 10,000. The series boasted both camera capabilities and value for money. The company has tried to do the same with the Realme 6 series, which is the successor and comes with many other missing features from the Realme 5 series.

The Realme 6 series, like its predecessor, consists of two phones: Realme 6 and Realme 6 Pro. The company hailed the Realme 6 Pro phone as its new Pro that aims to redefine the brand’s “product portfolio.” That said, we would like to add that Realme 6 Pro cannot be considered a true successor to Realme 5 Pro, given its high price. So it can only be a successor in the name sequence. We’ve been using the device for some time, and here’s what we think about it

Realme 6 Pro: Design And Display

Realme 6 Pro has two color variants: Lightning Blue and Lightning Orange. Our unit of assessment was the Lightning Blue color model. The smartphone has a new lightning bolt design on the back that resembles a lightning bolt in the sky. The design is best shown in the color variant Lightning Orange. Ahead, the back panel is made of glass, unlike the Realme 5 Pro, which had a plastic back.

Realme 6 Pro weighs 195 grams and lies firmly in hand, even when used without a cover. So be prepared for extra weight when adding a back cover. The back panel of the phone registers relatively fewer scratches and fingerprints. The handset has a four-camera setup aligned vertically on the top left with the LED flash next to it. The camera module sticks out a bit, making it wobbly and a bit shaky.

The company’s branding can be seen on the bottom left of the back panel. Other design information includes volume buttons placed on the left. On the left is the power button. There is no rear-mounted fingerprint sensor on the device. Instead, it has a fingerprint reader on the power button itself.

As for the display part, the smartphone features a 6.6-inch Full HD + LCD screen with a resolution of 1080×2400 pixels. The display also houses the dual front cameras placed in the top left. The screen of the smartphone is covered with a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The screen of Realme 6 Pro offers a refresh rate of 90 Hz. We had no complaints about viewing angles or color reproduction with Realme 6 Pro. The only negative here is the Realme 6 Pro’s brightness level, which we think is lower and inadequate, especially for use in daylight.

Realme 6 Pro: Camera

The camera was one of the main highlights of Realme 5 Pro. Realme 6 Pro has camera features as one of its USP. The smartphone is one of the main highlights of the Realme 6 Pro. The handset has a 64 MP primary camera on the back. It uses a Samsung GW1 sensor and has an aperture of f / 1.8. Other available sensors are a 12 MP lens (aperture f / 2.5), an 8 MP wide lens (aperture f / 2.3) and a 2 MP macro lens (aperture f / 2.4). For selfies, the handset features a dual camera on display, consisting of a 16 MP primary camera on the front (aperture f / 2.1) along with an 8 MP secondary lens (aperture f / 2.2). The front camera of the phone comes with Ultra Steady mode, Portrait mode, and Night mode.

Speaking of the camera’s performance, the 64MP camera combines four photos of 16MP pixel size to reproduce the final image. The lens clicks on good photos with defined sharpness and retains large highlights. The HDR mode adds more detail to the image quality. However, noise can also be noticed in the photos clicked. Then there is the telephoto lens that offers 2x optical and 5x hybrid zoom. One can choose the zoom from the camera app itself. While not impressive, it does the job for you. The lens can capture the true colors of the object and reproduce it with some details.

The ultra-wide-angle lens photos come as a disappointment as the image lacks color accuracy and dynamic range. Pictures taken with the ultra-wide-angle lens often lose detail. The 2MP macro lens also works well and will hardly disappoint. The camera on the back of the phone also offers Ultra Steady mode and Bokeh mode for videography. The Star performer of the Realme 6 Pro rear camera, as with the Realme 5 Pro, is the night mode. A fast shutter speed ensures minimal blur in the images. While there is some level of noise in the photos, it can be avoided. The phone captures night photos that are social media-worthy. Building on the performance of the front camera, Realme offers a primary lens with a wide-angle sensor, which means wider selfies. The saturation level in selfies clicked with the 16 MP camera is decent, which means that photos are more vivid and colorful. The photos do not miss any details.

Realme 6 Pro: Hardware And Software

Realme 6 Pro is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G octa-core processor with a clock speed of 2.3 GHz. It is equipped with eight Kryo 465 cores. The phone has LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.1 storage options. The smartphone has up to 8 GB of RAM and is equipped with an internal storage capacity of up to 256 GB. It runs on the latest Android 10 operating system with a layer of Realme UI on top.

The smartphone offers a refresh rate of 90Hz. This makes the everyday experience smoother. There was no delay when switching between the apps. Multitasking was nothing to complain about. The phone has a relatively clean UI with large app icons. However, bloatware is important for many custom user interfaces. Fortunately, these pre-installed apps, such as UC Browser and Opera News, can be removed.

We used the phone to stream videos online for longer hours with data on, and there was no noticeable heating issue we encountered during those hours. The sound output was loud enough. It is equipped with Dolby Atmos and hi-res audio quality. No need to use the earphones with Realme 6 Pro if the room is small. As we said before, the viewing angles of the screen are satisfying and nothing to rock about. The phone has an Adreno 618 GPU to boost the gaming experience.

Realme 6 Pro: Battery

Realme 6 Pro has a battery capacity of 4300 mAh. It comes in conjunction with a 30-watt charger and VOOC 4.0 flash charge. The company claims the device can be charged from 1-100% in one hour. While the phone gets to 100% juice in about an hour, the device also heats up while charging. That said, the Realme 6 Pro has a decent battery life and can easily last a day on a single charge.

Value For Money – How Much Does Realme Pro 6 Cost?

The Realme 6 Pro offers meaningful improvements throughout but at a significant price increase. At Rs. 17,999 (~ $ 236) for the base 64 GB version with 6 GB RAM, up from Rs. 3000 (~ $ 40) compared to the Realme 5 Pro.

The phone faces stiff competition from both new and established devices. On the one hand, there’s the newly resurrected Poco X2. The X2 has a slightly faster Snapdragon 730G chipset and, more importantly, a cool new 120Hz display. However, software optimization was poor.

Another excellent option is the Redmi K20. This has been around for a while, but the construction remains top-level. The Snapdragon 730G chipset performs well, and the cameras certainly stand out. The light-up, pop-out camera serves as a fun party trick to complete the package.

The Redmi Note 9 Pro is another obvious competitor to the Realme 6 Pro. We recently reviewed the phone and thought it was an excellent evolution for the popular series. The Redmi Note 9 Pro lacked feature additions such as a high refresh rate display but made up for a lower price.

Verdict

Realme comes with a starting price tag of Rs 16,999. The price goes up to Rs 19,999 for the high-end 8GB RAM variant. Is it expensive? To that, we would answer that the phone is an excellent value for money. In the price segment of less than Rs 20,000, the phone has too much to offer. A competent processor, a quad camera with 64 MP main sensor, long battery life with quite fast charging, and a large screen with a refresh rate of 90 Hz. However, there is room for improvement in a better camera, bloat-free user interface, and others. The phone will compete with Poco X2 and the company’s own Realme X2, which offer a Snapdragon 730G processor by paying a few more bucks.

But should one invest in Realme 6 Pro? Given the many positives over a few negatives, the answer is clear.
