Samsung’s One UI 3.1.1 Is Bringing Next-Level Foldable Experiences to Galaxy Z Series Users

As of today, One UI 3.1.1 is no longer exclusive to Samsung’s latest foldable phones – the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3. The company is now rolling out the One UI 3.1.1 firmware update for each of its previously released foldable devices, including the original Galaxy Fold.

Samsung created One UI 3.1.1 to improve the user experience for foldable device owners with additions such as drag and split, natural window switching, better multi-active window, cover screen mirroring, and more.

We’ve covered these One UI 3.1.1 features before in our Galaxy Z Fold 3 review and our best features story. They certainly took the user experience to a new level, and luckily any enthusiast of foldable devices should now more or less take advantage of these changes, depending on the model they own.

Which One Ui 3.1.1 Features Are Available For Which Foldable Phones?

  • The best features in One UI 3.1.1 are Drag & Split, Multi-Active Window and Natural Window Switching, Auto Rotate Apps, Custom Aspect Ratio, Flex Mode Panel, Taskbar, and Cover Screen Mirroring.
  • With drag and split, you can open a URL in split-screen mode while browsing the web without having to reopen another browser instance. It works by dragging and dropping the desired link to the edge of the screen.
  • Multi-Active Window and Natural Window Switching now provide a better experience with options to adjust the height and width of open apps when using split-screen mode with three apps.
  • Rotate all apps allows users to enable landscape orientation for apps that work natively only in portrait orientation.
  • The custom aspect ratio for apps allows you to choose a different aspect ratio for apps that don’t fill the entire screen. Options include full screen, 16:9, 4:3, and app default.
  • App Split View allows for a more tablet-like user interface for the Z-Fold series or, more precisely, for various apps. Now, this feature works with apps that don’t support it by default.
  • Likewise, Flex Mode Panel adds Flex Mode compatibility to apps that don’t have native support.
  • The taskbar is a nice addition to the Galaxy Z Fold series. It is somewhat reminiscent of the original Edge screen for the Galaxy Note Edge. It’s a permanent system tray that contains your favorite apps. It makes switching apps a lot easier.
  • With cover screen mirroring, you can easily transfer – or mirror – the layout of your cover screen home screen to the foldable main display. It allows users to have a more consistent UI design on both home screens without having to do all the work manually.

Most of these features are designed for the book-like form factor, meaning they are not available for the Z Flip series. The foldable clamshell phones have access to the Flex mode panel and Drag & Split, but not much more. Nevertheless, these additions are appreciated.

In the Galaxy Fold series, both the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the original Galaxy Fold take advantage of most of these new features in One UI 3.1.1. In fact, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will benefit from all these new features, while the original Galaxy Fold will lack two: Cover Screen Mirroring and Flex Mode Panel.
