Samsung has recently started rolling out the One UI 3.1 update for various devices, including the Galaxy S20 series. Along with the update, it appeared to have enabled eSIM functionality in regions such as India.
As reported by Piunikaweb, One UI 3.1 update for India has firmware version G98xFXXU6DUB5. It weighs 1246.69 MB and offers the latest user interface for the Galaxy S20 + variant (SM-G985F). Some users of the Samsung community forums have confirmed that the e-SIM functionality is enabled after this update.
As you can see below, the screenshot on the forums shows the eSIM options in the settings-> SIM card manager. If you remember, Samsung released the Galaxy S20 series in February 2020. At the time, devices in India had eSIM support, but Samsung had disabled it.
So to use a secondary SIM card, one had to take out the memory card and use the slot for another network. For those of you who don’t know, the Samsung Galaxy S20 comes with a hybrid SIM card slot, which means that users can use a nano-SIM card + microSD card or two nano-SIM cards at the same time.
Either way, with eSIM, enabled, you can now use the device with two networks and one SD card at the same time.
Plus, that’s not all that the One UI 3.1 update brings up. Like other regions (South Korea, UK, Europe), the India region also offers improved performance, private sharing, removal of GPS location data in pictures, more widgets on the lock screen, the second recording of video calls, zoom lock (in camera) and more.
That said, the update should also enable eSIM features for other regions (such as the US).
Samsung recently raised the bar yesterday by extending support for security updates for a total of 4 years. Eligible devices including Galaxy Z, S, Note, A, M, XCover, and Tab series will receive monthly/quarterly updates accordingly.
Activate ESIM on my Galaxy phone
Follow the guide below to learn how to activate and remove your eSIM on your Galaxy phone. Before activating your eSim on your Galaxy phone, make sure you are connected to an internet connection through your cellular data or your Wi-Fi network.
Before following the guide below, you must first contact your network provider to set up your eSim and also to receive your activation code or QR code to complete the activation.
- Go to Settings> Connections
- Select the SIM card manager
- Tap + Add Mobile plan
- Your Galaxy phone will search for connected eSIM subscriptions, if it cannot find anything, you can Add using the QR code or Add using the activation code
- Add with QR code
- Place the QR code or barcode within the guidelines to scan it
- Once your place has been added, tap OK
After you activate your eSIM, you can see it in the SIM card manager.
