Saving Contacts on Your SIM Card, Phone and E-mail is Explained.
If you’ve ever wondered where to save a new mobile contact on your Android or iPhone, don’t fret – this guide is for you! There are many options, and we’ll take a look at the pros and cons of each.
If you want to save a new number, you will be asked where you want to save it. Here are your choices:
This option was the first place when it didn’t appear in phone memory in the 90s. SIM cards come in different memory sizes, which affects the number of contacts you can store.
Your SIM card can probably store about 200 contacts. The advantage of saving directly on the SIM card is that you can remove the SIM card and link it to a new phone, and you have direct contact with you.
The downside is that all contacts are locally on the SIM card and not secured. This means that your contacts will be lost if you lose or damage your phone or SIM card. You can also store multiple numbers per person and instead create one contact per number, for example, “Daddy work” and “Daddy mobile.”
Another option is to save your contacts on the correct phone. Many Androids store the contacts on the microSD card in the phone. Because contact information takes up so little memory, you can store as much as you want and never worry about running out of space.
Again, the benefit is that you can transfer the SD card to another phone, and it will work right away. But also with the SIM card, the problem is that the contacts are stored on the card.
If you decide to save here, we recommend backing up your contacts to your PC or Mac using an SD card reader. You will likely need to purchase an adapter to connect the microSD card to your computer.
Android requires a Gmail account to run. The advantage of this is that you can choose to save the contacts in your Gmail account. This way, as soon as you save a contact, it will immediately sync with your account, which means you can log in from any Android and all contacts are already available.
You can view saved contacts from anywhere by signing in to Gmail and selecting Contacts from the left drop-down menu. Alternatively, contacts.gog.com can take you there.
If you ever choose to leave Android, you can easily back it up by going to Manage contacts to export contacts.
This menu also allows you to import contacts saved as imported map files (VCF) from your device.
Apple makes it very easy to save your contacts. All details are secured in iCloud, and you cannot store contacts on the SIM card.
So if you get a new phone and are synced, you can select “Restore from iCloud Backup,” and your contacts will appear. With iCloud Contacts, you can sync across all Apple devices. This means that all your contacts will appear on your Apple gadgets through one login.
You can also use iTunes to transfer contacts from your old iPhone to your new iPhone if you cannot use iCloud. Plugin your old phone and sync your contacts with your PC or Mac.
Then unplug it, plug in your new phone, go to the “Advanced” menu, make sure “Contacts” is selected under the “Replace information on this iPhone” submenu, and click OK.
