Qualcomm Launched First-Ever Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders

Qualcomm is an indirect player in the smartphone market that recognizes new trends and sets revolutions in motion. Now the company wants to be more than an ‘indirect’ player and get involved. The company is now entering the smartphone market with a very unconventional but promising smartphone. Today, the company is introducing a new smartphone called “Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders”. Qualcomm doesn’t seem like much to give such a name. As the name suggests, this is not a device for regular users but rather for tech enthusiasts and especially Qualcomm Snapdragon chips.

As expected, the smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders comes with everything Qualcomm has to offer. These include Snapdragon Sound, Elite Gaming, and more. The device aims to bring the chip manufacturer’s advanced technologies closer to users. So it is not really a smartphone for the mass market, but enthusiasts.

Qualcomm smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders specs

The smartphone for Snapdragon Insider is developed by ASUS. Apparently, this is the supposed gaming phone being developed by both companies. Under the hood, it carries the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 and that is no surprise. Too bad it will be obsolete once the Snapdragon 888 Plus hits the market. Anyway, the handset has 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It gets its power from a 4,000 mAh battery, which is quite small by today’s standards. Fortunately, it has support for 65W Quick Charge 5 charging speeds. However, the company only offers an included 35W power adapter.

The design carries with it some aspects of the ROG Phone 5. This includes a 6.78-inch AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and Full HD+ resolution. According to Qualcomm, the panel offers 800 nits of brightness with HDR10 and HDR10+ certification. It also has Corning Gorilla Glass Victus in tow.

Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders Price

There is only one version of this phone, which keeps prices simple: it costs $1499 in the US, £1099 in the UK, and €1299 in Europe.

We will announce more details once the phone actually goes on sale.

Release Date

Qualcomm has announced that the smartphone will be available to Snapdragon Insiders in August 2021 but has not given any details on when it will be available.

It will be available in the US, China, Germany, UK, Japan, and Korea, followed by India, but no specific dates are available.

Design and build

  • 173.15 x 77.25 x 9.55mm, 210g
  • Midnight blue
  • Illuminated Snapdragon Fireball Logo
  • Gorilla Glass Victus

The smartphone for Snapdragon Insider will only be available in one version and will be midnight blue with an illuminated Snapdragon fireball logo on the back of the phone.

There’s a fingerprint scanner on the back of a phone that’s quite large, but it has a large screen, so that’s to be expected.

There is a bezel at the top and bottom of the screen, with the front camera tucked into the top bezel, so the screen stays clear. It is a flat screen with Gorilla Glass Victus.

Qualcomm has not confirmed the material of the back, but since this phone is built by Asus, we also expect a metal frame and glass back.

This is a big phone: compared to other premium phones, it’s bigger than the S21 Ultra, bigger than the Find X3 Pro.

There are stereo speakers with a front-firing top speaker and a side-firing bottom speaker.

Included in the box is a bumper for protection – along with other included accessories that we’ll discuss below.

Screen

  • 6.78 inch Samsung AMOLED
  • 2448 x 1080 pixels, 144 Hz
  • HDR10 + support
  • 800nit, 1200nit tip

For Snapdragon Insiders, there is a 6.78-inch display on the smartphone, which is about the same size as the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The screen’s layout, with the bezels at the top and bottom, suggests it’s set up for gaming, as those bezels provide off-screen space to grab the phone in the landscape – it also has a refresh rate of 144 Hz, which gamers want to appreciate.

It’s a Samsung AMOLED panel, so it should deliver great picture quality while supporting HDR10+ with a typical brightness of 800 nits and a peak of 1200 nits.

The resolution is 2448 x 1080 pixels, which is not the higher resolution you find on phones but is typical for gaming phones.

Performance And Hardware

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G
  • 16GB RAM, 512GB storage
  • Dual SIM card
  • 4000mAh battery, 65W charge

This phone is all about showing off performance and has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 at its heart – note that this isn’t the recently announced Snapdragon 888+.

There is 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage and again, these are the only versions of the phone – there are no variants.

As a result, this phone supports 5G worldwide, so that one phone comes with all 5G bands.

The battery capacity is 4000 mAh, which sounds a bit light for a device of this size and positioning, but supports charging with 65 W, with this changer also included in the delivery. There are also two braided USB-C cables for charging.

This is an Android phone, it comes with Android 11 and there is no additional bloatware from Qualcomm, it is a stock Android.

Cameras

  • Triple camera system:
  • Main unit: Sony IMX686, 64MP, 1/1.78in, 0.8μm, f/1.8, OIS
  • Ultrawide: Sony IMX363, 12MP, 1/2.55in, 1.4μm, f/2.2
  • Tele: 8MP, 3x optical, OIS
  • Front: 24MP

There’s a triple camera system on the back of the Qualcomm device and since this phone is built by Asus, it’s no surprise that the main camera and ultrawide are the same as the ones on the Zenfone 8. That’s okay because these cameras are there. pretty good at it.

The exact performance has yet to be revealed. We don’t know if this will be an Asus experience or a Qualcomm experience, but Qualcomm has announced that it will offer automatic AI zooming on the video so you can focus on the important stuff. It also offers 8K video recording (thanks to the high-resolution main sensor).

Adding a good telephoto lens also opens up the possibility for triple optical stills, and that means there are some decent cameras on the back of this phone – but whether it can compete with strong offerings from other flagships remains to be seen.

The front camera is a 24-megapixel camera and this is different from the Zenfone 8, so we really have no idea what the performance will be like.

What’s in the box?

  • Phone
  • 65w charger (35w in india)
  • Braided cables
  • Headphones
  • Bumper

Since this is a pretty special phone, it comes as a package along with extra extras (again, kind of like the way gaming phones are sold).

The box, of course, contains the phone as well as the aforementioned 65W charger and the braided cables for charging the phone, and the included headphones. India gets a 35W charger.

Not just any old pair of headphones, these headphones are $300 custom Master & Dynamic MW08 headphones. These are great true wireless headphones, so getting them into the box is quite a job – and they’re a part of the total cost.

The reason these headphones are in the box is that Qualcomm wants to use this phone to play Snapdragon sound. It’s one of the first phones to be offered, and it looks like Qualcomm hopes to set new standards for device audio in the future. Qualcomm’s big game here is 24-bit 96kHz wireless audio – how exactly that works, or how well it’s supported in a larger context, remains to be seen. Apart from these bits, there is also a bumper to protect your phone. All in all, it’s a great package!
