11 Essential S Pen Features for Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Owners

If you own a Galaxy Note 9, you should know what your S Pen can do. Learn to multitask, translate text, and more.

The slim pen hidden inside your Samsung Galaxy Note 9 isn’t just for taking notes. It actually serves many more unique purposes that you may not even be aware of.

Most smartphones do not have the luxury of a pen. Since your phone has one, you can use it whenever the opportunity arises! Pull out your S Pen and start practicing — here are the S Pen tips you absolutely need to know if you own a Note 9.

1. Take Photos And Videos

Tired of clumsily holding your phone while taking selfies? You follow all the tips to take a good selfie, but you still end up with a double chin. Did you know you made S Pen photography a breeze?

Take out your S Pen and press and hold the pen button. After a few seconds, your camera will open. When you’re ready to take a photo, just press the button on the S Pen again.

You may want to take pictures with the front camera instead. In this case, double-click the S Pen button, and the camera will switch from back to front.

To record videos with your S Pen, you need to adjust your settings. Navigate to Settings > Advanced Features > S Pen > S Pen Remote > Camera. Under App Actions, you will see a section called Camera. Controls what your S Pen does when you click the pen button once and when you click it twice.

To record a video with one (or two) clicks, select that option and choose Record Video from the drop-down menu.

2. Use your S Pen as a remote control

Just as your S Pen acts as a remote control for your camera, it also acts as a remote control for other purposes. Don’t want to use your S Pen to take pictures? Instead, choose another app to use with it. Your S Pen comes with Bluetooth, which means it still works up to nine meters from your phone!

To change your remote settings, go to Settings > Advanced Features > S Pen > S Pen Remote. Select the section Hold down the pen button until. A page will appear listing all the apps you can open with your S Pen.

The best apps for this feature are your internet browser, clock, or any of the S Pen features. Scroll down to see the different ways you can use your S Pen to browse the web. By default, a single press takes you to the previous page, while a double press takes you to the next page. You can also choose to scroll the page up and down.

Don’t forget the great integration of the S Pen with videos and music – click the pen button to pause or play your media. You can even use your S Pen to switch slides during a professional PowerPoint presentation.

3. Unlock your phone

Let’s say you’re giving a presentation with your S Pen and need to unlock your phone remotely. Fortunately, you don’t have to rush to your phone to unlock it manually. Just click the button on the S-Pen and your phone will be unlocked remotely.

To enable this feature, go to Settings > Advanced Features > S Pen > Unlock with S Pen Remote.

4. Write screen-off memos

You don’t need to open the Samsung Notes app to quickly scribble. Pull out your S Pen and take a note without unlocking your phone. The screen shutdown memo is turned on automatically when you start writing.

The pencil icon in the top left corner of your screen changes the thickness of your stroke, while the eraser option lets you remove any mistakes. To save your Doodle, select Save to Notes or put the pen back in the holder. You can find your note in the Samsung Notes app.

5. Send A Funky Live Messages

After a while, you’ll probably get bored of sending plain text messages. To show your friends a little more fun, grab your S Pen to send them a live message.

Select Live Message from the Air Command menu. In the bottom menu bar, you can change the color of your backsplash, insert a photo from your gallery or add an AR emoji.

The two icons in the top left corner change the line width and color of your pen. If you really want to be creative, you can add an effect. Choose from ink, glow, sparkle, hearts, snowflake, and rainbow. Each option gives your message a special touch.

When you’re done writing, you can view your message as a GIF and send it to your friends.

6. Translate certain words

If you own a Galaxy Note 9, you don’t have to switch back and forth between translation apps and your internet browser. Open the Air Command menu by removing your S Pen and selecting the Translate option.

Swipe your S Pen over a word and it will instantly be translated into the language of your choice. Tapping on the translation will take you to the Google Translate app for more detailed information.

7. Multitasking with an eye

Have you ever used picture-in-picture mode on your TV? Gloss works the same way.

You can open Glance from your Air Command menu, but it won’t appear by default. To add it to your Air Command menu, navigate to Settings > Advanced Features > S Pen and scroll down to the Shortcuts section under Air Command. Click it and choose which apps you want to show in the Air Command menu.

Once you’ve added Glance, you can use it to minimize your current app. The app will appear in the lower right corner of your screen as a small moving window. Hover the S Pen over it to open the minimized app again. When you’re done, move your S Pen away from the screen to return to the other app.

Wondering how to get rid of the minimized screen? Use your S Pen to drag it to the trash can at the top of the screen.

8. Use Bixby Vision

You surf the internet and come across an interesting photo. No matter how much research you do, you just can’t figure out what it is. However, you can identify just about anything with Bixby Vision. In case you didn’t know, Bixby is like the Samsung version of the Google Assistant.

Once you’ve added Bixby Vision to your Air Command menu, simply open it with your S Pen. To identify an image, run your pen over it. Bixby automatically selects the image and gives you several options to get more information about it. Choose to view store results, find similar images, extract text (if any), and even scan a QR code.

9. Enlarge All

Some websites are not optimized for mobile devices, making the text painfully small and unreadable. Since the Samsung developers have thought of (almost) everything with the Note 9, they have opted for a built-in zoom tool.

Add the Magnifying Glass app to your Air Command menu and your S Pen will act as a virtual magnifying glass. Just hover your S Pen over text or an image to enlarge it.

10. Turn your phone into a coloring book

After a long day at work, do whatever it takes to get rid of stress at work. Coloring books are a popular way to relax, and you don’t even have to pay for them.

Install the Coloring app from your Air Command menu and you can choose from a wide variety of images to color with your S Pen. Choose your brush type, customize your color sets and you’re on your way to creating a work of art!

11. Channel Your Inner Artist

One of the biggest reasons to use the S Pen is for drawing, and while it may not be as comfortable as drawing on a large-screen tablet, it’s handy for sketching on the go in an instant. The Note 9 has the Penup app pre-installed and it’s a great choice for sketching, but you can always head over to the Google Play Store and download a third-party app. The S Pen is pressure-sensitive just like a pencil, which helps tremendously when drawing.

Getting to know your S-Pen

Now that you understand the versatility of your S Pen, you’ll (hopefully) not just use it for taking notes. It’s time to show off these tricks to your friends and make them want a Note 9.
